The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that help in the removal of wastes from the body. As the kidneys filter blood of impurities, minerals and acid salts can accumulate and harden over time. These solid crystalline deposits are called kidney stones, and can form in one or both kidneys. The stones can travel down the urinary tract and block the flow of urine, causing pain and bleeding.

Kidney stone formation is a common urinary system disorder that can form in any individual. Laser pyeloscopy is one of the best treatment options for kidney stones.

Pyeloscopy is a procedure where in a thin fibre-optic endoscope is passed into the kidney from the bladder through the urethra. Due to the flexible nature, the instrument allows visualization of the entire kidney drainage system. The scope contains an instrument port which allows for introduction of laser fibres to break stones, and micro-baskets to grab the stone fragments.

The advantages of this procedure include:

  • No incisions are required
  • Can be performed as a day procedure
  • Faster recovery
